ALBANY, NY, May 21 – Coming off the successful “NY Solar Industries 2010: The Business of the Sun” conference May 12-13 in Albany, the solar industry is moving ahead with its public and private sector partners to reach its goals for solar thermal and electric usage across the state.

Presented by New York Solar Energy Industries Association (NYSEIA), the event brought some 250 industry leaders together to discuss the industry’s future and forged stronger relationships with government agencies, economic and workforce development, manufacturers, distributors, installers and professional service providers, according to President Ron Kamen, senior vice president of EarthKind Solar.

“The NYSEIA conference is an important event for a rapidly-expanding industry in New York State,” said Frank Murray, president of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). “Solar energy is going to play a central role in helping New York reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, create clean energy jobs and achieve the ambitious renewable energy goals set by Governor David Paterson.”

Long Island Power Authority President and CEO Kevin S. Law said the conference “serves as an important tool for the solar industry and utilities to come together and share information on how we can expand our solar initiatives throughout the state while continuing to create clean energy jobs.”

“The NYSEIA conference was more than well attended and that underscores the opportunities for solar energy, particularly the role that solar thermal can play,” said Anthony G. Collins
President Clarkson University.

Solar Thermal and Electric Moves Forward

Next steps for the association include working as a member of the Solar Thermal Consortium (STC) to roll out the implementation plan for the state’s first solar thermal (solar heating and cooling) roadmap; and working to get the state Legislature’s approval on a solar electric (or (photovoltaic) plan to reach 5,000 Megawatts of usage.

“The solar thermal roadmap developed by the Solar Thermal Consortium is an important contribution to New York’s work to diversify our energy sources, strengthen our energy security, reduce our environmental impacts and create clean energy jobs,” said Murray. “The public private partnership that helped create this plan will provide the momentum needed to help make this vision a reality.”

More than 40 speakers presented during the two-day event at the Crowne Plaza City Center, presented by NYSEIA along with The Solar Energy Consortium, the NYS Solar Thermal Consortium, and dozens of government, corporate and other sponsors. The association also recognized 17 projects and individuals with its first 6KC awards. Photos of speakers and award winners are available at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/z5/sets/72157624051357354/.
