The Kind Sun Initiative is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives decommissioned solar panels a second life, redirecting certified, functioning solar infrastructure away from landfills and into the hands of communities that need affordable, reliable power.

We source decommissioned panels from Canadian and U.S. solar installations, certify their function, and redeploy them as community microgrids across the Americas. Every panel rehomed is waste diverted and 15–20 years of clean generation recovered. We work with Indigenous communities, cultural institutions, schools and grassroots organizations to build energy resilience where the grid is unreliable, expensive, or absent.

We design each project around community needs — powering water stations, cultural centers, emergency gathering spaces, and educational facilities. Our approach applies circular economy principles, prioritizing community ownership, local capacity, and long-term sustainability over short-term interventions.

We believe the clean energy transition shouldn't leave vulnerable communities behind — and that the infrastructure to power that transition already exists. It isn't waste. It just needs to get to the right places.
